MY MEXICAN SHIVAH, A film by Alejandro Springall NR, 98 min,
Unpredictable and frequently hilarious. Jewish Week
A comedy that transports diversity into the realm of the surreal.Variety
Set in Polanco, a Jewish quarter of Mexico City, My Mexican Shivah is a gentle comedy about how the death of a man results in the celebration of his life. Family and friends sit shivah for Moishe Tartakovsky, a much beloved patriarch, and suddenly all are forced to confront each other. Domestic crises escalate into a circus of conflicts and characters. Mourners include a Catholic ex-lover, an Orthodox ex-convict grandson, and a troupe of mariachi musicians. Commenting on the proceedings are two Yiddish-speaking spirits who make wry observations while accounting for Moishes soul. Based on a story by Ilan Stavans, directed by Alejandro Springall and produced by John Sayles and Maggie Renzi, My Mexican Shivaha festival favorite wherever it playsfeatures a musical score performed by The Klezmatics.
