ILL BILL (LA COKA NOSTRA, NON PHIXION, ETC) FEATURING Q-UNIQUE & DJ ECLIPSE FAM ROYAL CREW PARKER & the NUMBERMAN $12 IN ADVANCE / $15 DAY OF SHOW DOORS: 8 PM / SHOW: 9 PM
ILL BILL: Driven by an affinity for graphic violence, porn, and government conspiracy theories, Ill Bill (William Braunstein) is best known as the founder and frontman of four-man underground rap group Non Phixion. Because of the group's racy subject matter, Non Phixion constantly found themselves bouncing from label to label during the late '90s, despite acclaimed 12" singles like I Shot Reagan and Black Helicopter (both produced by Ill Bill's brother Necro). Ill Bill had to establish the independent Uncle Howie Records before the Brooklyn-based crew could finally issue its debut album, The Future Is Now, in 2002. Through his label, the hardcore MC/producer initiated his solo career with his first album, What's Wrong with Bill? (2004), as well as with a series of Ill Bill Is the Future mixtapes. But after Non Phixion officially broke up in 2006, he also oversaw and pressed solo material by NP members DJ Eclipse and Sabac Red. Two years before his second full-length, The Hour of Reprisal, arrived in 2008, Ill Bill co-founded La Coka Nostra, a collective that also includes DJ Muggs and members of House of Pain, among others.
FAM ROYAL CREW: This night will feature STEVEN FLEX, MOODSWINGKING & NOTHIN'LESS. While the Fam Royal Crew wasn't made the official crew moniker until 2009, the entire crew has been connected since early 2006. Around that time all members were converged in San Diego and found themselves quickly running in the same circles and DJing in the same clubs (notably the legendary San Diego bar Landlord Jim's (R.I.P.). Shortly after Landlord Jim's closed, it was apparent something had to be done to keep the vibe alive. Fam Royal quickly came together. Fam Royal is dedicated to the art of moving butts, house party style throwdowns, deep underground shit that make you run up to check labels, and stupid funky cuts you don't hear played nearly enough. If it's funky, Fam's on it. Fam Royal came together to rep for a mantra that wasn't being represented enough; good music comes FIRST, because good music transcends. Fam's roots span from Milwaukee to San Diego, from Hawaii to The Bay and beyond. Fam Royal's original founding members were DJs Hippo, J.Blow and Myson King. Fam Royal quickly expanded to include Steven Flex and Broken Dreams. Fam also shares close affiliations with San Diego's House Of Rep, and Designated Hittaz.
PARKER & the NUMBERMEN: a hip-hop trio featuring Jack King, Jamal Smith, and Brandon Zamudio. According to the band, "The proclaimed college graduates would contribute to Negro advancement by grabbing the bull by the horns and leading the uneducated masses to the Promised Land. Du Bois dubbed the future leaders the Talented Tenth." The group says its aim is to create "socially relevant tracks aimed squarely at the average Joe." In 2011, they released a seven-video DVD documentary called Lorna Doone, as well as an EP called Shortbread and another DVD called Shortbread: The Movie. Their EP Early was nominated for Best Hip-Hop Album at the 2011 San Diego Music Awards. Later that year, they released a seven-video DVD documentary and video compilation called Lorna Doone, as well as recording a collaborative EP with Broken Dreams. An early 2012 EP Clockwork Slang was produced by Mr. Ridley (Orko Eloheim, Black Mikey, etc.). In summer 2012, a mixtape called Gondola was posted as the first of a series in a London-based art magazine, Art Wednesday. The mixtape features mostly new and unreleased Room E tracks (including two live studio sessions with Room E's band of A Scribe Amidst the Lions members Kris Towne, Mike Hams, and Bobby Roquero), two new tracks from Parker & the Numberman (with whom Room E recorded an album of "more straight forward hip hop beats"), and selections from Al Green, The Moody Blues, and more. In August 2012, the band won Best Hip-Hop Album at the San Diego Music Awards.
