Newton Choral Society Presents Breadth and Depth
Come experience the sweeping emotional power of universal human themes. When commissioned to write a setting of the Sabbath morning liturgy for the American Reform congregation, Bloch learned Hebrew and steeped himself in the text. Ultimately, he spent four years creating a large-scale work designed to be performed uninterruptedone better suited to the concert stage than synagogue.
Bloch said of his composition: "It is a whole drama in itself.I hope it will bring to the souls, minds and hearts of the people, a little more confidence, make them a little more kind and indulgent than they were and bring them peace."
Soloist: Rick Lawrence, baritone
