This Just In: Writing Topical Comedy - Tuesday - July/August 2020 ONLINE CLASS
ALL SUMMER CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS ARE NOW ONLINE DUE TO THE SHELTER IN PLACE ORDINANCE.
Students will learn the basics of topical humor writing in this introductory course. Every week students will be introduced to different types of topical formats and media in a collaborative writing room environment. This class can also provide weekly accountability for current comedians looking to add more topical humor into their stand-up sets or writing packets.
The course will give students the opportunity to spend five weeks in a supportive environment while learning the fundamentals necessary to write topical comedy.
The course is founded on the comedy principles of the critically acclaimed Lincoln Lodge, a national leader in cultivating and developing new comedy talent. Join one of Chicago's top comics, Adam Burke, for a course in writing topical comedy offered by the locally and nationally revered Lincoln Lodge, Chicago's top stand-up and variety showcase.
Instructor Adam Burke has been performing comedy in Chicago and throughout the U.S. for over ten years. He is a fixture on showcases and clubs throughout the Midwest and beyond. He is a regular panelist on NPR's popular comedy quiz show Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and was a writer for WGN's Man of the People with Pat Tomasulo. Voted Best Standup by readers of The Chicago Reader in 2014, he was also the winner of Second City's Up Next Comedy Competition. He has appeared at numerous festivals including Bridgetown Comedy Portland OR, Just for Laughs Chicago (four years running), and the local stage of Funny Or Die's Oddball Comedy Festival. Burke released his debut album Universal Squirrel Theory on A Special Thing Records in 2012.
The five weekly 2 hour sessions of this course will focus on: Monologue jokes Joke runs Talk-back sketches Deep-dives Create a 15-20 minute topical comedy show. Grad show date TBD .
The class requires no previous sketch comedy or writing experience and culminates with a presentation of the material developed in class. Grad show date TBD .

Grad show date TBD upon reopening of The Lincoln Lodge Training Center which is currently closed due to the Illinois Shelter In Place Policies. Following guidance from the City of Chicago with regards to the current Corona Virus situation and with concerns for the health and well being of our patrons, performers and staff The Lincoln Lodge will be closed until further notice.
All students will receive an email no later than one day prior to their class start date which will include a Zoom link and all information on how to access this online class.
REFUND Policy: Full refunds are available any time up to 5 days before the first class commences. Refunds after that time are at the course administrator's discretion.
ROLLOVER Policy: If you are not able to participate in class after registration and the refund window has expired you can potentially roll your registration over to the next course session provided space is available. This is subject to course administrator's discretion and a $40 administration fee. Please note there is NO facility to rollover classes once you have attended ANY classes.
