Atlantic Clarion Steel Drum Band
The Atlantic Clarion Steel Band, a Maine based group, has been in existence for nearly 30 years. Forget the stereotype of straw-hatted men in banana shirts playing "Yellowbird" and "Matilda" on the cruise ship dock. This is a modern steelband, with instruments, called "pans", gleaming and tuned to an astonishing degree of clarity, playing an amazing range of music from concert classics to pop, from jazz to calypso: a chamber ensemble, a jazz band and a party band all in one. The versatility of the pans can be appreciated through the polished arrangements which show the variety of sound and tonal quality of the instruments and the high level of musicianship of the players. Carl Chase, Nigel's father is one of a small number of people in the United States who can make and tune pans. All the band members are involved in teaching "pan", and promoting its use in schools, colleges and community programs throughout New England.
The Atlantic Clarion Steel Band has recorded and released five albums of their music. They are available on cassette and CD.
