Noe Valley Chamber Music Presents: Kitka
Sunday March 9 at 4pm, NVCM presents: Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble performing traditional and contemporary vocal music that explores the depth and breadth of female experience in celebration of International Women's Day.
The concert will take place at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Audience members have the chance to mingle with the performers while enjoying light refreshments immediately following the performance. Tickets range from $10-$25, with a discount for seniors, students and advance purchases. Free for children 12 and under. Childcare is available. Ample free parking.
This internationally-acclaimed vocal arts ensemble explores songs of love, marriage, work, play, celebration, lamentation, and spiritual longing. Kitka's unique sound is infused with the lush harmonies, stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, intricate ornamentation, and resonant strength of Eastern European women's ensemble singing. Concert highlights will include songs collected by the ensemble during recent tours and song-catching expeditions in Serbia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, Russia, and Ukraine.
Founded in 1979, Kitka began as a grassroots group of amateur singers from diverse backgrounds who met regularly to share their passion for Eastern European women's vocal music. Under the direction of Bon Singer from 1981 to 1996, Kitka blossomed into a refined professional ensemble earning international renown for its artistry, versatility, and mastery of the demanding techniques of traditional and contemporary Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian vocal styling. Under the co-direction of Shira Cion, Juliana Graffagna, and Janet Kutulas from 1997 to 2010, Kitka grew to earn recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chorus America, and the American Choral Directors' Association as one of this country's premier touring vocal ensembles. Now functioning as a creative collective, many international musical authorities consider Kitka the foremost interpreter of Balkan and Slavic choral repertoire working in the United States.

This concert is part of our contemporary neo@noe series, in which we ask artists to play new, unusual or rarely performed repertoire, collaborate with innovative instrumentation, or expose our audience to music inspired by different cultural backgrounds.
Noe Valley Chamber Music has been presenting superb chamber music in San Francisco since 1992. NVCM offers concerts of excellent quality at an affordable price, as well as opportunities for audience participation and socialization. We encourage performers to talk informally about their music from the stage; thus members of our community experience outstanding concert performances in an informal, yet authentic chamber music tradition.
