Wordstock Superstar Poetry Slam Competition
We have featured spoken word performers and slam poets before at Wordstock, but last year's response to our slam showcase (Vancouver, BC native Shane Koyczan v. New Yorker Taylor Mali) was so astonishing that we decided to ratchet up the excitement this year. What we've come up with is an evening of competition that's sure to thrill you with verbal pyrotechnics, rhetorical explosions, incendiary recitations, and plain old fun: The Wordstock Superstar Poetry Slam Competition. We've assembled a group of six of the country's most outstanding slam poets: Anis Mojgani, Karen Finneyfrock, Buddy Wakefield, Jodie Knowles, Derrick Brown, and Tara Hardy. These six spoken word artists will compete for a grand prize of $1,500. Come on down to the Baghdad Theater, at 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland, on Thursday, November 6, at 9 p.m. This is going to be the liveliest, most energizing event at Wordstock, and we're kicking off the week with it. You don't want to miss this. Tickets are $15. The Wordstock Superstar Poetry Slam is sponsored by Portland Monthly magazine.
