Beginners Oral History Workshop
SFA Oral History Workshop: An Introduction for Beginners
PLEASE NOTE: registration should be accomplished on a desktop, not a phone or tablet, to enable access to the questionnaire.
This workshop will introduce a beginner audience to oral history. We will explore the methods, best practices, and ethics of oral history. We will discuss researching and designing your own oral history project, conducting an oral history interview, and processing and archiving resulting interviews. We will also discuss best practices for recording oral histories.
The workshop will also include a packet filled with SFAs fieldwork guidelines, recommended reading bibliography, and listening exercises to help you practice your new skills. The packet will be emailed in advance of May 19.
The workshop will be conducted on Zoom. Registered participants will receive a Zoom calling code the day before the event.
Schedule 1-2 p.m.Presentation: Planning an oral history project from start to finish 2-2:30 p.m. Short break and group discussion 2:30-3:30 p.m. Presentation: Oral History Best Practices and Ethics (with conversation) 3:30-4:00 p.m. Wrap up question and answer session
Presenter Annemarie Anderson is oral historian for the Southern Foodways Alliance. She earned a masters degree in oral history from the University of Florida in 2017, as the first graduate of that program. She also received her bachelors degrees in English and history from UF.
