Growing up in rural Maine didn't give Ellis Paul much exposure to folk music. But a scholarship to Boston College, hearing Bob Dylan's rendition of "House of the Rising Sun," picking up an acoustic guitar and a book of '70s hits changed his life. Since quitting his day job in 1992, Ellis has released 16 albums, won 14 Boston Music Awards, published a book and delighted audiences with his finely tuned story songs and a melodious, distinctive voice that travels easily from whisper to soaring volume. In today's world of "entertainment," there is little imagination and even less heart. Popularity passes for talent, Yet out of the rubble, phoenixes do rise. When we look for them, they appear. "Folk music has always included social commentary," Ellis admits. But what resonates with thousands of his fans is, as one music critic astutely observed, the parts of all of us and our experiences through life that we recognize in his music. A storyteller with empathy, fine eyes and an understanding of the human condition, Ellis weaves a tapestry of words and music that reach for the soul, give us hope, a reason to dream and to love. In albums like "Stories" and "The Day After Everything Changed," we hear one of the defining voices of American songwriting a lyricist who holds a mirror to the human experience and sings with the raw passion of a troubadour. "When you discover Ellis Paul, you stay for the duration."
