Aesop's Fables by Thistle Theatre
AESOP'S FABLES
Families of all ages will delight in Thistle Theatre's puppet production of Aesop's Fables. Aesop was born a slave in 6th Century BC and is heralded as one of the great moral teachers of all time. Aesop tells three entertaining stories of animals that have human foibles and strengths. Each of the tales is set in a different location on the Mediterranean Sea. The first fable, "The Raven and the Swan", is set in Greece and comically illustrates the lesson that true beauty is found within. Traveling to Egypt for the second fable, "The Lion and the Mouse", shows how a small mouse can help a mighty lion. "The Tortoise and the Hare" journey to the markets of Byzantium (now Istanbul, Turkey) in the classic story of how "slow and steady wins the race".
The production features the score and original songs written by Sue Ennis including two by Ann and Nancy Wilson of the rock group Heart, recent inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ben Burris and Gina Wilhelm are puppeteers directed by Jean Enticknap.
Thistle Theatre specializes in the Bunraku-style of puppetry that is an ancient Japanese art form. Although the style has been modified for the modern audience and performer, the basic idea remains the same: puppeteers who dress entirely in black to symbolize their invisibility operate the puppets.
