Join us in a journey of conscious, inspirational and spiritual music, and food - including a community potluck with a harvest soup and barbeque. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs, spoons and stories!

StoryHarvest will be held outdoors in Freedom Square!!  (Rain location is nearby at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, 3361 6th Avenue.)

-Don Byron will be performing a collaboration with a gospel group as the first event at 1 PM
-After a brief break, pop diva Nawal will be performing what has been described as an "indo-Arabian-Persian" type music as well as "Bantu polyphonies and rhythms mixed with Sufi trance" at about 3 PM

An informal storytelling of the buddhist Stone Soup will be held during the break between performances!!

StoryHarvest 2013 celebrates a year of public art installations, performances and workshops of the Sanctuary's "Found Art in North Troy" project, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts' "Our Town" program and a legal settlement with the City of Troy (see http://www.mediasanctuary.org/node/4026 for details).

About Don Byron-
Don Byron's newest project grows out of his in-depth studies of gospel music. Gospel pioneer Thomas A. Dorsey is a major inspiration, and Byron revisits some of the master songwriter's works alongside other classics as well as lesser-known gems of the genre.

As clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and social critic, he redefines every genre of music he plays, be it classical, salsa, hip-hop, funk, rhythm & blues, klezmer, or any jazz style from swing and bop to cutting-edge downtown improvisation. He has been consistently voted best clarinetist by critics and readers alike in leading international music journals since being named "Jazz Artist of the Year" by Down Beatin 1992. Acclaimed as much for his restless creativity as for his unsurpassed virtuosity as a player, Byron has presented a multitude of projects at major music festivals around the world.

"Calling Don Byron a jazz musician is like calling the Pacific wet  it just doesn't begin to describe it... Byron has carpentered an extraordinary career precisely by obliterating the very idea of category." - TIME Magazine

"Clarinetist and composer Byron has a knack for addressing varied genres in both celebratory and extended ways." - Entertainment Weekly

About Nawal-
Nawal originally comes from the Comoros Islands, also known as the "Perfume Islands" or "Islands of the Moon," located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. Born into a family with many musicians, Nawal bathed in both popular and spiritual music from a young age. Now living in France, today she is recognised as being a key figure from her native islands: the ever rising star of Comoros. A singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Nawal plays guitar, gambusi (traditional lute, inherited from Yemen), and diverse percussion. Nawal states "My main instrument, before anything, is the voice." Aptly called a "mystic pop diva", Nawal communicates something bigger than music  she has the capacity to touch people's hearts with her powerful voice and message.

"Nawal continues to dazzle us with her Sufi-inspired collection of songs... Nawal knows how to entertain our spirit and grace our presence with her divine musical prowess" - Inside World Music

"Nawal delivers a powerful one-woman meditation that salutes the recent uprisings in the Middle East and the human desire for freedom and peace." - Chicago Reader
