Ocean Ave Band
Lisa Mills and Don Wessels have played for presidents and graced the stage with some of the biggest names in show business. Nowadays they work close to home, sharing their unique brand of improvisational pop with Maine audiences 100 nights\year.
For this, their first appearance at Cadenza, they've enlisted three longtime sidemen to present a night of blues both classic and original. Come on and groove!
Lisa Mills (lead vocals) ranks among the hardest-working musicians in New England. Her love of music began while singing in church at a young age, was shaped by the R & B she heard while growing up in the Detroit suburbs, and has carried her as far as Carnegie Hall - three times!
As she enters her eighth year of Thursday night shows at the Kennebunkport Inn, where she has hosted over fifty local musicians, she maintains a full performance schedule with both the Ocean Ave. band and her a capella quartet, Women of Note, founded in 1991. Additionally, Lisa is a soloist with the 17-piece Deep Blue C Studio Orchestra, directed by retired Berkeley School of Music professor David "Doc" Vose.
Lisa's musical partner Don Wessels has over 3,000 gigs under his belt, from appearances opening for acts ranging from Maynard Ferguson to Hall & Oates to a four-year bass apprenticeship with country artist Jimmy Woods. His chromatic harmonica album, On Orkney, recorded in Scotland, has been played on NPR's Thistle and Shamrock. Don's inspiration is fueled by his Parker Fly guitar, which provides a unique harmonic framework for the band.
Mark Gunter is a much sought after keyboard player with roots in the music that inspired bands like The Rolling Stones and NRBQ. Whether riffing on his Hammond B-3 or providing solid piano accompaniment, Mark has provided country licks, soulful grooves and bluesy solos for a wide range of Maine bands. As a life-long Kennebunk resident & middle school Science teacher, he taught piano & guitar lessons to many budding young musicians after school. He can currently be seen performing with Jeff Merrow, Finestkind Country Band and Ocean Ave.
Carl Menard has been a professional percussionist (not just a 'drummer'!!) and music teacher for more than 40 years. He has been active in musical theatre, playing for Biddeford City Theater, Embassy Players, the Schoolhouse Arts Center, Stages, Portland Players, and Lyric Music Theatre. Carl has also toured with some big name acts and played with several function bands, but he really enjoys the small group vibe performing with Lisa Mills and Don Wessels.
Michael Corleto was just 13, when, while attending a Buddy Guy concert, he was invited by Buddy to come on up. He jumped at the opportunity and, according to Portland radio station WBLM, blew the roof off the place. That should tell you all you need to know about this teen-aged guitar phenom.
Michael's soulful, complex playing is Inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Marcus King, Jeff Beck, Chris Stapleton, Jimi Hendrix, and Warren Haynes. On January 1, 2020 Michael introduced his first band to the world... Great Aunt Alice, a four piece jam band that hits the ears of music lovers in all genres. Be on the lookout for them throughout coastal New England starting early 2020 and beyond!
Tickets are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door.
