Self with Others
S E L F with O T H E R S led by John Britton
"At the heart of the work is the search for pleasure - we train, perform, create through our joyful, wholehearted, disciplined giving of ourselves to our work and to others."
As part of a series of programming on ensemble and psychophysical training, Art Via Corpora is pleased to offer the Los Angeles performance community this worksession with John Britton, a Master Teacher and theatre artist whose unique approach to training individuals within an ensemble setting has been taught throughout the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Mexico, Southeast Asia and Australia. This worksession marks the first time John has offered his expertise in the United States.
The worksession will be offered over the course of four days but flexible for the needs of all participants. Thus, if you are only able to attend one session you will be given an opportunity to enter deeply into the work, while attendance at all four days will foster development of individual psychophysical coordination, ensemble sensitivity, improvisational performance strategies, and performance material.
The first half of each day will involve training through core exercises as well as structured and free movement improvisation. The second half of each day will focus on developing performance skills in solo, duet and ensemble improvisation based in the body but including vocal and verbal languages.
The work is physically demanding, joyous, playful, rigorous and deeply personal. Right at its heart is an understanding that personal pleasure is the foundation of all performance - if we find our pleasure, we find ourselves as artists.
The workshop is suitable for actors, dancers, circus performers, improvisers or anyone who uses their body as an expressive vehicle. It is a foundational training applicable to all performance in any style or genre.

About John: John Britton is a performer, director, improviser and teacher, specializing in ensemble, physical expressivity and improvisation. He teaches performers from theatre, dance, circus and music, through an extensive international program of workshops (in recent months, in India, Greece, UK, Sweden, Germany and France) and residencies (including recently in rural France, Tamil-Nadu, the Himalayan mountains and the Greek island of Lesbos). He also offers individual training and mentorship to artists and companies.
John is Artistic Director of DUENDE, a collective of international artists committed to training and the development of ensemble-based, interdisciplinary live performance. He is also lead author and editor of 'Encountering Ensemble' - a major work on ensemble performance to be published by Bloomsbury in 2013.
Since 1998 he has been developing his own approach to training ensembles - an approach he calls 'Self-With-Others'. This core training forms the foundation of all his work, is explored in detail in 'Encountering Ensemble', and is increasingly being applied by those he has taught, in a wide range of contexts.
John's solo show - 'Echo Chamber' - has been performed in the UK, India, Greece and Australia and continues to tour internationally. He also performs long-form improvisation performances both as a soloist and in ensemble. Between 2004 and 2013 John was Senior Lecturer at Huddersfield University (UK) and has extensive experience in placing his work within both practical and theoretical research projects.
