Are you overwhelmed by all the contradictory advice circulating about how to transition your classes to online? Most of them either say "Why you must do a good job," or "Why it's okay to do a bad job" regarding addressing learning goals in this unprecedented situation.
But addressing learning goals is not the only thing we do as teachers! If you're teacher committed to equity and justice in your classroom, online teaching may bring up a whole new set of challenges.
In this short workshop, Chris Barcelos will explain and demonstrate useful practices to address problems you may not have thought of in the transition to online teaching, such as - How to support queer and trans students who are stuck at home with family members who don't know about their identity, or don't support them? - How do you address racist comments in an online discussion board, differently than in an in-person class? - What universal access practices can help smooth the transition for students who usually get disability accommodations in the classroom?
There will be lots of opportunity for questions and discussion.
About the trainer: Chris Barcelos is an Assistant Professor of Gender & Women's Studies at University of Wisconsin Madison. They have taught in a wide range of higher ed settings from community college to an elite liberal arts college, including five years of teaching online classes.
Accessibility notes: To access this workshop fully, you will need a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone. (Or you can call in by phone, but it's not as easy to participate that way.) If you're not used to this kind of online environment, don't worry - we'll help you figure it out! We aim to keep the sessions accessible to the widest possible range of people. For example, almost all lecture content and all activity instructions will be presented both verbally and in writing, and all visual content will be described. If you need simultaneous captions for the discussions, let us know in advance and we will try to make it happen. If you have any other access needs that we haven't covered here, please contact us so we can figure it out together: davey@thinkagaintraining.com, 845-417-6518.
The sliding-scale registration fee operates on the "honor system," to keep the workshop accessible to people with a range of means. We trust you to select the price category that's fair for you.
