This training is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and UW Medicine and generously hosted by Nurse Family Partnership Thurston County Public Health.
Learn how to effectively identify and screen parents experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. This two-day training is appropriate for a range of providers, including OBs, pediatricians, midwives, RNs, social workers, mental health therapists, doulas, public health employees, home visitors, IBCLCs, and more.
Objectives of this training: Day 1: Basic Topics *Understand the "real" transition to parenthood. *Know the spectrum of perinatal mental health disorders. *Know the risk factors for PMADs. *Know key prevention strategies. *Understand high risk populations and health disparities. *Become knowledgeable about the impacts of perinatal mental health on families and communities. *Know the components of a treatment plan. *Be able to effectively talk about, and screen new/expectant parents for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Day 2: Advanced Topics *Understand the impact of birth experiences on postpartum emotional health. *Become knowledgeable about risk and symptoms for partners and fathers. *Become knowledgeable about psychiatric medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding. *Become knowledgeable about supporting families in the NICU *Become knowledgeable about feeding issues and perinatal mental health. *Understand the impact on infant and children. *Understand impacts on partners and relationships.

Continuing Education Credit: *11.5 CEUs pending for MSWs, MAs, MFTs. This Program has been approved for 13.5 CEUs for Licensed Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists by the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work. *11.5 Contact hours for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 17084 for 13.5 contact hours. *This taining also meets the training requirements for national Perinatal Mental Health Certification through Postpartum Support International.
PRESCRIBER FOCUSED BREAKOUT SESSION: UW perinatal psychiatrists, Drs. Amritha Bhat and Deborah Cowley, will lead a prescriber-tailored breakout session, that includes presentations, case examples, and interactive small group exercises focused on screening, treatment (including psychopharmacology), and informed consent during the perinatal period.
The breakout session that will focus on: *Process of differential diagnosis of common mental disorders in the perinatal period *Risks of untreated mental disorders and risks of psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and lactation. *Informed consent discussions with pregnant and breastfeeding women regarding commonly used psychotropic medications

About the Speakers: Heidi Koss, LMHC is a psychotherapist in private practice, serving individuals, couples and families, with an emphasis on pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, birth trauma, as well as treating other related birth issues.
Heidi has contributed to the field of perinatal mental health in many ways over her career. She is the Co-Founder of the Northwest Association for Postpartum Support (NAPS). She served on the WA state leadership advisory committee for the Speak Up When Youre Down Postpartum Depression Awareness Campaign and has been an instructor at the Seattle Midwifery School for their PPMD course. She has collaborated on a PPMD training curriculum with the University of WA School of Nursing Infant Mental Health and Development Program and the Washington State Department of Health First Steps Division. She has been a Certified Postpartum Doula and Certified Lactation Educator for over twelve years, and the recipient of the prestigious DONA International Penny Simkin Award in 2006. Heidi is also the proud mother of 2 beautiful daughters.
Leslie Butterfield, PhD is a clinical psychologist who specializes in pregnancy and postpartum issues. At her Seattle, WA private practice she works with moms and couples struggling with pregnancy and neonatal loss, the transition to parenthood, pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, and birth related trauma. Additionally, she has designed and taught the counseling skills curriculum for Seattle Midwifery School and Bastyr Naturopathic Universitys Department of Midwifery for the past 15 years.
In her capacity as an educator, Leslie has provided trainings and consultations to: University of Washington; Singapore KKH Hospital for Women; AWHONN(Association of Womens Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses); Marce Society; PALS (Pacific Association of Labor Support); API (Attachment Parenting International), NAPS (Northwest Association for Postpartum Support), Catholic Charities, Planned Parenthood, and others. Recently she has served on the board of PATTCh (Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth) as Vice President, and Perinatal Support Washington as the former chair and current board member.
Deborah Cowley, M.D., is a board-certified psychiatrist at UWMC-Roosevelt and a UW professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Cowley has expertise evaluating and treating women who have mental health issues during pregnancy and postpartum, and throughout their life cycle, including premenstrual and menopause-related psychiatric symptoms. She also has expertise evaluating and treating anxiety disorders and depression. She believes it is important to understand the biological, psychological and social aspects of a patients emotional disorders. She enjoys educating patients and having them participate in their own treatment whenever possible. Dr. Cowley earned her M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Her clinical interests include anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, obsessive compulsive and related disorders, panic disorder, postpartum depression, evidence-based medicine, maternal mental health and womens health.
Dr. Amritha Bhat is a perinatal psychiatrist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She earned her medical degree from Bangalore Medical College, India, and completed a psychiatry residency in St. Johns Medical College, India. She completed a second residency in Psychiatry with a focus on womens mental health and integrated care from the University of Washington, and a fellowship in Primary Care in Psychiatry. Dr. Bhat also earned a Masters in Public Health from the University of Washington School of Public Health. She is board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
