Nautilus continues its series of studio productions with a staging of ORDINARY DAYS, a new music-theater piece by composer/lyricist Adam Gwon.
ORDINARY DAYS follows four young New Yorkers whose lives unexpectedly intersect as they search for fulfillment, happiness, and love through a score of vibrant and memorable songs that ring startlingly true to life. Jason is about to move in with his long-time girlfriend Claire, while Deb and Warren unexpectedly stumble into each others' lives. Join them as they maneuver through the complexity of making connections, learning to find the sacred in the secular and the magical in the mundane. Episodic in nature, ORDINARY DAYS weaves together a variety of emotional statements to tell two love stories in 21 parts.
The New York Times noted that ORDINARY DAYS "captures with stinging clarity that uneasy moment in youth when doubts begin to cloud hopes for a future of unlimited possibility." Other critics have said that ORDINARY DAYS is "a quietly affecting show -- crisp, fluid and funny lyrics -- delighful, insightful -- the score ebbing between breezy conversation, frenetc intensity, and tender, sometimes heartrending, melodies -- brilliantly written -- extraordinary theater -- truly life set to music!" And composer/lyricist ADAM GWON has been called "a talent to watch -- an emerging master of musical theater -- a terrific ear for melody -- a skilled theater craftsman -- this won't be the last we hear of Adam Gwon!"
This production features a fabulous cast of superb Nautilus singer-actors, all of whom appeared in our Rough Cuts reading of ORDINARY DAYS in 2010: Kersten Rodau performed in our production of JOHN AND JEN; she works frequently with Chanhassen Dinner Theatres and the Ordway, and recently appeared in the Jungle Theater's URINETOWN. Doug Scholz-Carlson has appeared in our productions of MAN OF LA MANCHA and EUROPERA; he currently serves as Artistic Director of the Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona. Jill Anna Ponasik has appeared in our productions of ALICE UNWRAPPED, CAROUSEL, LOSS OF BREATH, MAN OF LA MANCHA, and many others; she currently serves as Artistic Director of Milwaukee Opera Theater. Max Wojtanowicz performed in our production of CAROUSEL, along with many Rough Cuts programs; he appears frequently with Children's Theater Company, and has produced a number of wildly popular Fringe shows.
The cast is supported musically by music director/pianist Mindy Eschedor, who has served as music director for many Nautilus productions, including I AM ANNE FRANK, JOHN AND JEN, ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE, THE LAST FIVE YEARS, and many others. ORDINARY DAYS is staged by Nautilus' artistic director Ben Krywosz, with scenic and costume design by Victoria Petrovich, lighting design by Michael Wangen, stage management by Conrad Burgess, and technical direction by Jon Hegge.
All performances will be presented in the NEW Nautilus studio, still in the Northern Warehouse in Lowertown, just downstairs from where we have been for the past 19 years. There's very limited seating -- only 40 seats per performance are available. Don't miss this exciting area premiere -- experience intimate music-theater guaranteed to confound your expectations of what "musical theater" should be!
