Sustainability Matters: A Discussion on Sustainability in Architecture Firms
With AIA Nationals ratification of the Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action in September 2019, one of the big questions in the discipline is what makes a sustainable architecture firm. In conjunction with The Big Move Toward Environmental Stewardship, the updated standards to AIAs Code of Ethics and AIA National COTEs support of the 9/20/19 Climate Strike call architects to action. Beyond AIA, the world, country, state, and region are all struggling to catch up to where we should be. Current initiatives in sustainability and the support for such initiatives within the Central Ohio region demonstrate both need and a potential course of action. Standards of practice for sustainable architecture firms including things such as energy modeling, exceeding energy codes, and other design strategies provide different directions to move forward.
AIA Columbus COTE is currently working on a survey of sustainable practices for architecture firms in order to assess the Central Ohio region. The committee hopes to provide resources for filling in the gaps between actual practice and practice of architecture that will meet the AIA 2030 challenge. Participants will review and critique the proposed survey, considering how their architecture firm would respond to the questions.
