FERPA - Knowing Is Half The Battle
What is FERPA? This seminar will explain what FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is, and what it means to community organizations working with school districts. We all know that FERPA has something to do with limitations on data sharing by the school district, but what does it actually mean?
We will answer these questions:
*Do community-based organizations who are working to support student's academic achievement in partnership with the school district have a right to student data?
*Do school districts have to share student data?
*What limitations are there on data sharing?
*When is data sharing permissible under FERPA?
*Does HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) also limit data sharing?
*What about the National School Lunch Act?
*What happens when there are several community organizations collaborating? Who gets the data?
We will also look at the process of working with the school districts and developing a data sharing agreement or "MOU."
