John Harmon Jazz Piano Solo
A big name in jazz, John Harmon was featured on Marian McPartland's NPR program "Piano Jazz." The Lawrence University grad studied jazz piano with Oscar Peterson. He also studied composition with Henri Pousseur. After touring Europe, he performed and recorded in New York City. He then returned to his alma mater, where he founded its nationally renowned jazz studies program. He also was a pioneer of the jazz-fusion movement. He incorporated funk, rock, and blues into the genre, while writing and performing for the award-winning nonet Matrix, which he founded.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the evening will include comments by John on the forthcoming recording of his composition EARTH DAY PORTRAIT, an orchestral setting of the eco-ethical texts of Muir, Leopold, and Nelson, as spoken by their descendants. An excerpt from the EMI/Abbey Road master recording of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop will be "broadcast" on Cafe CODA's house system.
CDs featuring Harmon as jazz pianist and composer will be available for purchase.
