GIRMA BÈYÈNÈ & AKALÉ WUBÉ Mistakes On Purpose THE ALBUM OF A GREAT COMEBACK - THE REBIRTH OF A LEGEND
Girma Bèyènè is a true legend when it comes to Ethiopian music. After an exile to the United States and a radio silence that lasted 25 years, he jubilantly accepted the invitation from the French group Akalé Wubé to return to the spotlight and perform once more. The comeback took place last September during a memorable concert alongside Akalé Wubé at the Studio de lErmitage (Paris 20). Tracks (Arte), Le Monde, Libération relayed this major event, which aroused many strong emotions amongst fans of Ethiopian Music. The adventure could not stop just yet Under the direction of Francis Falceto (director of the famous Ethiopiques series) Girma and Akalé Wubé came together and recorded this album in order to immortalize this renaissance.
AKALÉ WUBÉ In their 8 years of existence, Akalé Wubé have never stopped widening the canvas onto which they lay their music, which keeps becoming richer and deeper just like the their primary source of inspiration: the popular Ethiopian repertoire of the 60s and 70s. The band started off covering music from the Ethiopiques series, after which they immersed themselves deeper into Ethiopian music, all the while multiplying their collaborations with musicians and dancers from Ethiopia, Africa and Europe. Slowly but surely, clocking in at over 200 concerts in Europe, Asia and Africa, the band has become one of the worlds leading ambassadors of Ethiopian groove.
Press: Rolling Stone ...This cocktail of vintage jazz-funk Eritrean music is the UFO which will make us regret that the aliens have been so discreet all this time... (Philippe Blanchet) BBC 1 ...Definitely one of those records to play at the end of the night... (Gilles Peterson) Le Monde ...A clear and owned influence, transformed into a musical invitation which has character and grooves with materly confidence... (Patrick Labesse) Les Inrocks ...A joyful and scorching groove, which makes you wish youre basking in Addis Abeba... ...An excellent debut album... (Francis Dordor)
