Felipe and Benny's "Joyful Sound"
Brazilian tap dancer Felipe Galganni and multi instrumentalist Benny Oyama combine forces for an evening of live music, singing and tap dance. They will be exploring a variety of genres including jazz, bossa nova, folk music and more, taking the audience on an exciting adventure. Felipe Galganni - tap dancer, teacher, and choreographer - is known for his unique style and versatility in blending American tap dance with his Brazilian roots. He is currently a faculty member at Steps on Broadway, Joffrey Ballet School, Broadway Dance Center, and the American Tap Dance Foundation where he is also an artist in residency. Felipe has danced with renowned companies such as the New American Tap Dance Orchestra and Dorrance Dance in addition to creating his own work with Felipe Galganni & Company. In 2017, the company premiered TAP&TOM, a tribute show to the music of the Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. The concert was then presented at Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out, and at the 14th Street Y. In 2018, Felipe received the Machado de Assis Medal for disseminating the Brazilian culture in the USA, and in 2019 had the honor of performing with the Duke Ellington center band at Birdland. Most recently, he premiered his solo shows Felipe 101 and FORGET ABOUT ME at Pangea NYC, and performed as part of the quintet Nilson's Matta Brazilian Voyage at Dizzy's club at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Benny Oyama is a multicultural Japanese and Jewish singer-songwriter born and raised in New York City. The poetry and harmony of Benny Oyamas intimate music has been likened to Nick Drake, Caetano Veloso and Simon and Garfunkel. Benny sings with a surprising multitude of voices, carried by subtle and complex guitar work firmly rooted in Brazilian and American Folk traditions. His offering is a unique, heart-opening music with a mission towards melting, healing, and connectedness. Benny is based in Brooklyn, NY.
" ...All My Trials, choreographed and performed by Felipe Galganni was an emotional number. You could definitely feel the dancer's heavy load in life in the room. Galganni has such clean and crisp sounds." Broadway World by Caryn Cooper
"In Fuga, Felipe Galganni juxtaposed the precision of tap with the curvaceousness of capoeira, the Brazilian martial art. Their musicality was contagious." New York Times by Siobhan Burke
"....One of Jobim's more curious songs is Waters of March", the tall, long-legged Galganni had a photo of Jobim on a table and put on a hat similar to what Jobim wore and masterfully sang and danced to the song." Explore Dance by Bonnie Rosenstock
