Birdwatching #2 at Oceano Lagoon with Tom & Owen Slater
LLCC offers a second bird watching walk with Tom and son Owen. This is an easy walk through a paved area around Oceano Lagoon.
The Guiton Trail circles the fresh water lagoon. In the 1920's developers had plans for a hundred homes surrounding the lagoon. Spoils from dredging the lagoon created a land peninsula. Developers ran out of money before they could proceed with the project.
Harold Guiton, also a real estate developer, became owner of the parcel but saw the lagoon as an important natural area and in the 1930's donated the land to the state park system.
The lagoon is alive with resident Mallards, Coots, Great Blue Herons and Black-Crowned Night Herons. The rich riparian habitat also attracts migrating warblers and other visitors
We will discuss the birds that show themselves to us on that specific day and time. We will talk about habitat and species.
You will learn how to locate and identify some of the local birds by sight and sound
Meet at 8am at Coolidge Dr. in Oceano (a couple streets north of Pier St, past Old Juan's off Hwy 1)
