Hike through History: Jones/Charleston Farm
The Historical Society of Rockland County Invites You to Join Us for a
Hike through History to the Jones/Charleston Farm
When: Saturday, March 28, 2020, 9 am-12 pm Where: The meeting place will be provided with confirmed reservation Price: $25/person (Includes guided hike and your choice of a high-quality book about Rockland County history)
Numerous small farms were once scattered throughout the Ramapo Mountains, including within what is Harriman State Park, within the Palisades Interstate Park system. To make way for the new park in the early part of the twentieth century, dozens of small property owners and farming families were forced to vacate their land and relocate. This hike visits the site of one of those farms and explores the history of the hardy families who farmed the weak mountain soils in remote areas deep in the woods.
This approx. 2.5+ mile hike (round trip) is rated moderate for difficulty. All hikers must wear sturdy hiking footwear and bring water and a snack. We also suggest that bringing a flashlight to help observe details a thirty-five foot deep, two hundred-year-old structure builtin into an embankment on the farm site.
