The Pathetx - 1981

Third Man Records is proud to announce the first-ever release of The Pathetx - 1981. Clocking in at 18:16 minutes, available in standard black and limited edition colored vinyl 12 45rpm versions.
To celebrate the release, the surviving members of The Pathetx will play a special reunion show at UFO Factory in Detroit on the album release date - Friday, March 13, 2020. It will be the first show for the band in nearly 40 years. Sadly, original drummer Ted Meek passed away in the 90s, but in an amazing tribute, Teds son Keith will be filling in on drums. Keiths band, The Beauticians, as well as The Stools will also be performing. Limited edition colored vinyl LPs will be available at the show.

While The Pathetx story starts way back in 1980, the story of Third Man Records and The Pathetx starts back in the mid 1990s. Founding member of the Detroit Cobras, Steve Shaw, and future Third Man Records honcho (not head), Dave Buick, form a friendship and start spending a lot of time together. One of their first conversations is about a punk band, The Pathetx, that Shaw had managed back in the the early 80s. He was sitting on an unreleased tape of some studio recordings that, in his own words, was pretty good. Fast forward a couple years, a young and future Third Man Records honcho (head), Ben Blackwell steps into the picture. Blackwell recalled a very similar early conversation. Over the next couple decades, Buick and Blackwell heard a lot about The Pathetx from Shaw and the Pathetx tape had now achieved mythical status. Shaw never stopped repping the band and singing their praises, as any good manager should do. In the winter months of 2019, Shaw walked into Third Man Records Cass Corridor location and handed Buick a flash drive with a smirk on his face. Without even listening, Buicks instant reacted with HOLY HECK!!! The Pathetx tape!!! We gotta put this out!. Upon listening, both Buick and Blackwell knew that indeed Third Man Records had to put this out. What a story - the legendary Pathetx tape hand-delivered personally by the manager to the label nearly 40 years later. Who could say no?!
The formation of the Pathetx began in 1980 with singer, Mark Leavitt, and guitarist, Greg Kutcher. They had been playing together in their basements for a while and were looking to get out on stage in the punk clubs in and around Detroit. They assembled the rest of the group, drummer Ted Meek, guitarist happy Tom McHenry and 16 year old bass player Mick Nasty, through newspaper ads, local punk walls and music stores. The Pathetx took their inspiration from the West Coast punk scene that was happening at the time, bands like The Germs, Black Flag and Dead Kennedys, as opposed to most of the other punk bands that were kicking around Detroit who were looking to The Stooges and MC5 to show them the way. Nunzios was the bands unofficial home away from home but they played every legendary punk club in the area: Bookies Club 870, Freezer Theater, Red Carpet, Windsors Coronation Tavern...you name it, The Pathetx played it. They shared the stage with Detroits first wave punk bands as well as the superstars of this new hardcore thing that was happening. They played the legendary Endless Summer Skatepark show with Necros, Negative Approach and Meatmen. Their live shows were filled with beer, blood and pogos.
