The documentary My Beautiful Girma tells the story of the renaissance of Girma Bèyènè, one of the most creative and prolific artists of the Ethiopian music scene in the 60s and 70s. After fleeing Ethiopias Derg military dictatorship in 1980 and working for 25 years as a gas station attendant in Virginia, Bèyènè returned to the spotlight with the French quintet Akalé Wubé, performing in a series of concerts in France, the United States, and Ethiopia.

About Gerima Bèyènè

Girma Bèyènè is a true legend when it comes to Ethiopian music. After moving to the United States and taking a 25-year hiatus from making music, Bèyènè jubilantly accepted the invitation from the Parisian band Akalé Wubé to return to the spotlight and perform once more. Together the artists transform 70s Ethiopian soul and groove music into a retro-futuristic soundtrack which makes you dance from head to toe. Their collaboration aroused many strong emotions amongst fans of Ethiopian music. Bèyènè is now ready for an epic homecoming in Washington, DC, a city that has adopted a huge Ethiopian community, with a show consisting of the best tracks from his legendary career, accompanied by Akalé Wubé, the band that helped him rediscover his sound.
