Bridget Barkan...In Her Feelings
"Every act of creation is first an act of destruction." -Picasso
"Paint your own Reality." -Frida Khalo
"Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror." -Rilke
Bridget Barkan peels back her layers one song at a time. Taking us on her artist's journey through personal struggles and liberation with stories of self-care, human connection, new love, and finding peace in a mad world. The always-reinventing multi-hyphenate will genre-bend and burn through eclectic interpretations of cover songs and her own original music with humor, emotional vulnerability and unapologetic truth. In this one long burlesque act, Bridget dances between the shadows and the light, discovering beauty in the fragments. She shares her signature storytelling about her experiences with strangers that serve as a message and mirror from the universe as well as introspection on getting older and redefining her passions. Her combined love of comedy, social justice and fearless sensuality is a delicious sundae ready to be served. Creative direction by the magical Dusty Childers. Accompanied by Yosef Munro and other guests. Audiences may be invited on stage to participate in stories and to join her in improvised song.
Bridget Barkan is a native New Yorker, a Performing Artist, Actress, Songwriter, Musician, Producer and Playwright and has been in the business since birth, literally. Her first job was posing as Baby Jesus for decorative wall plates (big shoes to fill) and some would say she peaked too soon but she has spent her life working on creative projects that honor the teachings of loving thy neighbor. From childhood until now, she has kept the fire burning as a professional actress appearing on Sesame Street and commercials and in various theatrical productions such as the original cast of Dog Sees God, and Spring Awakening. Film and TV productions including, HBO's Everyday People, a reoccurring role as one legged hooker Law & Order: SVU, Sherrybaby with Maggie Gylenhaal, God's Pocket with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brian DePalmas Redacted, Steven Soderbergh's The Knick, the voice of Misty Holloway on The Get Down, as well as, "Blue Bloods," "Blindspot," "The Last O.G." "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and FBI.
As a singer she toured the world with pop/glam band Scissor Sisters opening for Lady Gaga, and has shared the stage with Drag legend Joey Arias, Lady Rizo, Murray Hill and more. Barkan has been inspired by both the stage shows of Whoopi Goldberg, Lily Tomlin and Laurie Anderson and the music of artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Erykah Badu. As a multi-hyphenate she created 4 original one woman shows with Dusty Childers as an Artist in Residence in Joe's Pub working group. The shows went on to travel around the U.S. and with a successful run at The Peoples Improv Theatre. She has been said to be the offspring of John Waters and Cindy Sherman raised by the ghost of Janis Joplin. Using her humor, depth of character building and musical chameleon skin to push buttons, motivate conversation and promote healing. Currently, she is the Mistress of Ceremonies at the burlesque club Duane Park and a teaching artist leading songwriting workshops with incarcerated youth with Carnegie Hall. Through all of her endeavors she believes her greatest purpose is to create community through art and music.
