Sometimes a seemingly unlikely comparison between two things can grasp an author and hold them in an elaborate and illuminating meditation on an image. From this fixation, the extended metaphor emerges. This literary technique, used by poets such as Pablo Neruda, Sylvia Plath, and Elizabeth Bishop, offers readers a fresh perspective on a familiar object, event, or emotion sometimes playfully, sometimes painfully. In this course by Kate Sweeney Postle, we will discuss the characteristics of extended metaphor, read a variety of examples, and practice writing our own.
