A story can be grounded in its place/space and time whether told as poetry or prose. In this class with Jeannie Carlson, we will distill the enduring elements that make the setting of any piece of writing memorable. We will address choices of language, images, sensory details, and point of view in order to capture the magic of where the story happens. Students will have the opportunity to create and share a workshop piece that examines the source and authenticity of a location that has meaning to them, either real or imagined.
About the Instructor: Jeannie received her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Poetry & Prose) from Naropa University seven years ago, and has collectively taught 42 writing courses at St. Petersburg College and Hillsborough Community College since then. She is a writer who teaches rather than a teacher who writes. In addition to freelance work, she has two long-term regular writing gigs. Since 1998 she has been a correspondent for Tampa Bay Newspapers, Inc. where she covers features, special assignments and town meetings. Over 700 of her articles have been published with TBN in Tampa Bay Times, TBNWeekly.com and Beach Beacon venues. In 2017 she began writing a poetry column, ONE Inspires for the Northeast Journal where two of her poems are published in each issue accompanied by a local photo she took to inspire the verse. See links to some of her published writing on her website: www.JeannieCarlson.com.
