Attenberg
Greeces Official Entry for the Academy Awards®, ATTENBERG is a wonderfully deadpan, surprisingly touching coming-of-age story. 23-year-old Marina lives in a small, factory town by the sea where she passes her time watching Sir David Attenboroughs nature programs, listening to the proto-punk songs of Suicide, goofing with her only friend Bella, and tending to her ailing father. When a visiting engineer comes to town, the two form a tentative relationship that pushes Marina into contact with the strange and complex world of adulthood. Critically acclaimed, ATTENBERG is a sincere and humorous look at lifes defining moments.
"Boldly concieved!" Slant Magazine
"Director Athina Rachel Tsangari distinguishes herself from [Dogtooths] freak-show formalism with an underlying humanism and freewheeling playfulness." - Eric Hynes, TimeOut
"Initially, Tsangari seems to borrow from the airless upper-class ennui of Antonioni, but strains of spiky, irreverent humour and strange sexuality poke holes in any strict modernist homage. Still, its hard not to imagine the mood of the film fits larger echoes of turmoil in the country in an undefined way, it latches onto a widespread sense of loss and disorientation." - Christina Hyland, BFI
"For all the eccentricity, the film feels unexpectedly personal in addressing experiences everyone goes through at some point in their lives." - Film Comment
"Using occasional song-and-dance numbers with a melancholy Godardian kick, [Tsangari] creates a world that's off-center and alive with loneliness." - Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times
