"Oklahoma!" Presented by Calaveras High School Performing Arts
Rodgers and Hammersteins first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, setting the standards and rules of modern musical theatre. In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly (Zach Zahniser), a charming cowboy, and Laurey (Amaya Halepota and Madeleine Hedger, alternate performances, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie (J'Cie Garrett) and hapless Will Parker (Nate DeYarmon) in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.
Oklahoma! returned to Broadway several times, most recently in a reconceived and critically acclaimed 2019 revival directed by Daniel Fish. This American classic now comes to the Calaveras Performing Arts Center with a cast of forty talented and dedicated high school students from Calaveras High School. Presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals and with music provided by The MT Pit LLC, "Oklahoma" is directed by Ann Mazzaferro, with choreography by Taylor Wilson and Emma Darmsted. Set design is by Karan Bowsher, costume design is by the Mazzaferro Collective, costume coordination is by Emmy Baggie, lighting design is by Irene Melendez and Savana Owens, and Stage Management is by Cody Young.
Please note: Due to stage violence and mature themes, this production may not be suitable for audience members under age 10. Water-based fog and gunshot sound effects will be used in this production.
