The Souvenir
A shy but ambitious film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Tom Burke). She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams. From acclaimed writer-director Joanna Hogg comes an enigmatic and personal portrait of the artist as a young woman, combining passionate emotions and exquisite aesthetics into a lush, dreamlike story of young adulthood and first love. At once enrapturing and mysteriously unsettlingand featuring a profoundly layered breakout performance by Honor Swinton ByrneThe Souvenir is an essential and enduring film from one of our most distinctive and exciting filmmakers

"The Souvenir is a beautifully realized, painful movie that only hits the viewer in the hours and days after seeing it." - A. S. Hamrah, n+1

"Life and art are similarly melded throughout Joanna Hoggs gorgeously melancholy tale." - Kate Stables

"Rarely does a film come along that one wishes would never end. One litmus test for measuring a movies success lies in an uncanny feeling only the viewer can discern: do I long to return to my life, or am I rapt here in the theater, in company of these images and stories? Joanna Hoggs The Souvenir is a memorable cinematic lesson, so rich and articulated as to be better described as lived rather than seen." - Carla Miranda Scherffig, Reverse Shot

"Buoyed by delicate eroticism and drifting back and forth between staid, observational formalism and quivering naturalism, The Souvenir unfolds as a work of imperfect memory. As in her usual fashion, Hogg has no interest in holding the audiences hands through easily plottable events; the effect is one of putting places and faces together in an act of dreamy, but potent recollection." - Beatrice Loayza, Mubi

The Souvenir is one of my favorite movies of the year so far, but I almost want to keep it a secret. Partly because its the kind of film  we all have a collection of these, and of similar books and records, too  that feels like a private discovery, an experience you want to protect rather than talk about." - A.O. Scott, The New York Times
