Carmina Burana - presented by Sno-King Community Chorale, Cantabile Chamber Choir and Kulshan Chorus
Carmina Burana is one of the most performed works of all time, with good reason! Carmina may be very familiar, and most often this incredible work is performed with a chamber ensemble. But have you heard it performed in its original state with full orchestra, two grand pianos, and multiple percussionists?
Now for a mini-tour through Western Washington, our artistic director, Dustin Willetts, has brought together his three choirs: Sno-King Community Chorale, Cantabile Chamber Choir, and Kulshan Chorus, along with guest Kulshan Youth Choir, accompanied by orchestra members hand-selected from throughout the region.
Come and enjoy this marvel, a feast for the eyes, ears, and soul as they perform Carl Orff's masterwork based on twenty-four poems from the medieval collection, Carmina Burana. The 11th, 12th, and 13th century poems cover a variety of topics, as familiar in the 13th as in the 21st century: the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of Spring, and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling, and lust. Together these poems and music describe activities along the great wheel of life or wheel of fortune. As the wheel spins, we may be uplifted in the world. But just as easily, the activities or wheel of life may crush us. The moral is that no one of us is greater than any other, no matter his or her status. We should treat each another as equals, each struggling for purpose and meaning in the great wheel that is life.
From Drunks to Monks, Carmina celebrates humanity, life and, most importantly, the need for the human race to come together. The singers invite you to embrace and join in this celebration of the common bonds of humanity. The Choirs also join in performing a few of their signature selections to create a truly memorable experience.
