Newton Choral Society Presents Unity and Contrast
Unity and Contrast
Franz Schubert, Mass No. 5 in A-flat major Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 8pm Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA
We begin our 38th season with Schubert's dazzling Mass No. 5 in A-flat major, considered by many his finest. He labored intensely over the piece, longer than any other composition, and revised it extensively after its first performance in 1822.
Breaking with conventions in his four earlier masses, Schubert gave rein to greater intensity and expressivity. Romantic elements in one movement are followed by symphonic treatment of themes in the next. Forthright chorales contrast with more intimate solos, all while building unity amid diversity. Filled with expression and unusual sonorities, this stunning work is understood to represent Schubert's reflections on life and death.
Soloists: Kristen Watson, soprano; Pamela Dellal, mezzo; Martin Kelly, tenor; Thomas Jones, baritone.
