We were saddened to hear of the loss of fantastic, prolific author Elmore Leonard this past week. His stories and novels packed with exciting action, crackerjack dialogue and absurdly engaging characters have inspired dozens of films and TV series over the past 6 decades. Though some of our favorites (3:10 To Yuma, Jackie Brown, Out Of Sight) are arguably better films, it is very difficult to beat GET SHORTY for sheer entertainment value. Starring the crest-of-a-comeback Travolta as the dangerously charming Chilli Palmer an East Coast hood in La-La-Land who decides to try his hand at moviemaking GET SHORTY is rightfully lauded as one of the great Hollywood stories. As a bonus, screening the film is an opportunity to also pay tribute to two of our favorite character actors who recently passed: Dennis Farina, who plays Chilli's blustering gangster boss, and James Gandolfini, playing a hapless bodyguard/stunt man.
