Musica Antiqua Plays Back to Bach
Why do we listen to Baroque music on original instruments? Because we are likely to hear the music in the sonorities it was designed to be heard in. With Musica Antiqua we can hear the courtly music of Vivaldi and the spiritual music of Bach in a church, with gorgeous natural acoustics, and the kind of ineffable magic of these pieces.
Margaret Gries has put together a fantastic group of musicians that includes herself at harpsichord, Hal Ott at the transverse flute, Vanessa Moss on baroque violin, and her program includes some of the world's favorite music from Baroque masters.
This Musica Antiqua program presents music written in the early seventeenth-century in a style that is both virtuosic and expressive. This early baroque ensemble music is organized on principles of rhetoric, where the meaning of the words take priority over musical form. Featured instruments are cornetto and baroque trombone, were common in early seventeenth-century Italy, but rarely heard today.
