The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, designed by Louis Kahn, was completed in 1965, and is considered one of the finest examples of modern architecture. The Salk is recognized internationally not only for its stunning architecture but also for the pioneering science conducted there. Situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California, the concrete facades and teak windows have been exposed to a marine environment for over 50 years, resulting in significant damage and deterioration.
The presentation will describe the Salk Institute's conservation-based approach to the recently completed teak window restoration and the ongoing concrete restoration project.
