SPEAKERS:
Sarah Vielma, Director - College, Career & Technical Education Michael Goodbody, Program Manager - STEAM Innovation Don Webb, Director - Construction Management Department San Diego Unified School District
Ms. Vielma and Mr. Goodbody will provide an overview of the STEAM education initiative in elementary schools, and CCTE middle school and high school career pathways in engineering. Students with an interest in engineering have the opportunity to pursue a sequence of courses in engineering while in high school. They will share the programs and opportunities for partnership with members.
Mr. Webb will speak about SDUSD Facilities, providing a rundown of its bond program and upcoming work for consultants.
Mr. Webb's construction career began in 1978 in Los Angeles as a Union Ironworker installing reinforcing steel on structures ranging from multi-unit residential to bridges and water treatment plants. After more than 12 years, he decided the Inspection field would offer a much longer career in the construction industry. The next 15 years provided him with the opportunity to utilize his wide-ranging knowledge on some of the most notable projects in Southern California, including the $2B Diamond Valley Lake project in Hemet for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. In 2000, SDUSD was about to begin construction on projects funded by the $1.8B Prop MM. This was the beginning of what is currently approaching a 20-year career with SDUSD. Since then, with the passage of 3 more bond measures totaling $8.5B, Mr. Webb took on the challenge of overseeing all bond-funded construction for SDUSD. Currently, as Director of the Construction Management Department, he now leads a staff of over 120 construction professionals who manage and inspect over 60 projects annually with a value exceeding $350M.
