Gadfly Theatre Productions Presents: OTHELLO by William Shakespeare Directed by Cassandra Snow
Sept 20-29, 2013 People's Center Theater 425 20th Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55454
This classic drama of love & lust, racism & jealousy, and betrayal & revenge, gets a Gadfly twist this fall as director Cassandra Snow reimagines Othello as a modern-day lesbian head over heels for bisexual femme Desdemona. This gives us a chance to examine the unfortunately still relevant racial politics of the piece, (and how double minorities get treated in society) as well as sexism, homophobia, biphobia, and what happens not only to minorities but to the innocent bystanders when patriarchal zealots refuse to let go.
In our production, villainous Iago stands for a small but vocal minority who sees the times changing, and refuses to let them--unfortunately for the rest of the characters Iago's influence is still widespread and poisonous, and we see how that unfolds in tragic ways by the end.
This is a must see for anyone who identifies as queer, female, an ally, a lover of classic works & theatre, or anyone who wants a truly moving experience about personal politics, human emotion, and the devastating effects of jealousy & mistrust.
