Chancel Arts presents Nathan Jenson
Nathan Jensen attended Pacific Lutheran University as a music major. He transferred to The Evergreen State College where, under an independent contract, he studied musical composition with Timothy Brock. Nathan's parents were both ELCA Lutheran pastors, as such church music was a natural vocation for him. Shortly after graduating from The Evergreen State College, he became organist and choir director at St. John's Episcopal Church in Olympia until the year 2000 when he moved to Seattle. He became organist and choir director at First Lutheran Church in Bothell until 2005. He then became organist and choir director at St. John United Lutheran Church (by the zoo!) where he is still employed. In addition, he was also organist for St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ballard for three years. Nathan's principal teacher on the organ was David Dahl in Tacoma. Nathan is also a pianist for ballet classes. He began this sort of work at the Johansen School of Ballet in Olympia, then in Seattle at the American Dance Institute. He is now an accompanist for classes at the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle.
Nathan took up the violin in his early twenties and began playing second violin for the Olympia Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Timothy Brock. He currently plays first violin with the Thalia Orchestra under the baton of Michael Miropolsky as well as second violin in a recently formed string quartet.
Nathan is a member of the Compline Choir at St. Mark's Cathedral. He has sung with this group for the last fifteen years. Also, in 2005, he had the opportunity to sing with the Seattle Opera Chorus in the summer production of the opera Lohengren. Nathan is also an avid bell ringer in the style known as "change ringing." Change ringing is a specific style of English ringing performed by a group of people upon large tower bells. The bells swing full circle, balancing upside down on either side, and are rung in rapid mathematical permutations by way of long ropes. He used to commute from Olympia to Vancouver, B.C. to learn this peculiar art. In 2005 the first change ringing bells on the west coast of the United States were installed at the University of Washington where Nathan enjoys ringing when he can. Lastly, Nathan is a piano tuner and member of the Piano Technician's Guild. He maintains the pianos at for a number of churches, St. Mark's Cathedral, the Pacific Northwest Ballet as well as music teachers and music lovers of all types. This last summer he had the success of restoring the player mechanisms of two pneumatic player pianos.
