Beekeeping School (for aspiring beekeepers & the curious of mind)
Learn the basics to become a successful beekeeper, including what you need to know as an urban beekeeper. Led by experienced beekeepers and hosted by Peter Montague and Bill Perkins of the Boston Area Beekeepers Association. During the five indoor class you will: * Learn about the components of the hive, the tools you'll use to work the hives, the honeybees, and how they all work together; * Learn about honeybee behavior and physiology; * Learn how to manage & care for a hive from month-to-month through the course of a year; * Learn how to identify & control pests and diseases; and * Enjoy beekeeping tips, stories and laughs from a panel of fellow area beekeepers.
During an additional 3 hands-on outdoor sessions in our Mattapan Apiary, we will cover 1) assembling your equipment, 2) installing a package, and 3) performing your first inspections. We will also have a chance to practice using our smokers, opening hives, holding and moving frames,...
The classroom schedule is as follows;
1 - Feb 6th 7-8:30
2 - Feb 13th 7-8:30
3 - Feb 27th 7-8:30
4 - Mar 5th 7:30-8
5 - Mar 12th 7-8:30
The following field sessions are dependent on when packages arrive and are subject to change. The tentative dates are as follows;
1 - Mar 21st
2 - Mar 30th
3 - Apr 4th
Honestly, we're in the apiary a lot in the spring, and if you miss one session, chances are we'll repeat it within a week. If there's something you need to see or learn, we'll do our best to accommodate.
