Steet Fight
This disturbing, Oscar-nominated documentary of Newark, New Jersey's 2002 mayoral race throws light on some of the nastiest aspects of modern American politics. Mayor Sharpe James is the face of Newark's political machine, a tough, stylish shark who doesn't take kindly to challengers. Enter Cory Booker, a 32-year-old fellow black Democrat with an Ivy League education and a desire to shake up the system. As his upstart campaign begins to gain momentum, Booker learns all too well the price of bucking the system in Newark. James and his backers launch an all out attack on the young idealist, publicly questioning his qualifications, sexuality and even his racial heritage. By the time Street Fight erupts into an actual physical brawl, it has become clear that the city desperately needs a change from politics as usual.
