Mission Hills Heart and Soul
GUIDED WALKING TOUR The tour will focus on the original subdivision known as Mission Hills mapped out by local businessman and developer George W. Marston and colleagues in 1908. This was one of the first subdivisions in San Diego to feature contoured streets that matched the gently rolling land beneath. The varying street widths from main thoroughfares to smaller side streets were designed to harmonize with the homes being built near them, and accommodate the modern convenience of a major streetcar line. This smaller core area eventually lent its name to the larger neighborhood we now call Mission Hills.
Tour participants will walk past distinct architectural styles that developed and then waned in popularity during the intense buildout of about 30 years that created Mission Hills: Arts & Crafts, Prairie style, Spanish Eclectic and other Revival styles. Small bungalows here coexist with larger four-square styles and even a mansion. Our guides will share details about the architecture, various local builders, designers and the early residents who lived here. Vintage photos will help tell the story of a neighborhood important to the architectural legacy of San Diego.
Please join us! Walking tours will depart at 10-15-minute intervals from 10 am to 2 pm and will last up to 60 minutes each. All participants must be vaccinated. Masks required at all times.
