MET: Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky)
Anna Netrebko and Mariusz Kwiecien star as the lovestruck Tatiana and the imperious Onegin in Tchaikovsky's fateful romance. Deborah Warner's production, set in the late 19th century, moves episodically from farmhouse to ballroom, with a powerful snowstorm providing the dramatic setting for the finale. Piotr Beczala is Lenski, Onegin's friend turned rival. Russian maestro Valery Gergiev conducts.
Eugene Onegin is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera.
Actress and director Fiona Shaw will make her Met directorial debut with the opening of the HD season, Eugene Onegin on October 5, replacing Deborah Warner who will be unable to direct her staging at the Met due to an unexpected surgical procedure and the anticipated recovery time. Shaw's previous directorial credits include Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers, Vaughan Williams's Riders to the Sea, and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at English National Opera, and an upcoming production of Britten's The Rape of Lucretia at the Glyndebourne Festival.
