Shanghai Dreams
Shanghai Dreams is centered on the story of a 19-year-old girl named Qinghong whose father wants the family to return to Shanghai after relocating to Guizhou province. In the 1960's, encouraged by the government, a large number of families left Chinese cities to settle in the rural regions of the country in order to develop local industry. Less than 15 years later, many were desperate to move back to the urban sophistication of cities like Shanghai, disillusioned by life in the sticks and eager to taste the new freedoms. Her father, Zemin, reluctantly went to Guizhou under his wife's persuasion and he never forgave her. Guiyang is determined that their two children won't put down any local roots. To that end, he tries sabotaging his daughter's burgeoning romance with local factory worker Hong-gen. But Qinghong was born in Guiyang and considers it home. Talk of Shanghai makes her nervous and her father's belligerence brings out a sullen, rebellious streak. How can they all keep on living together when they don't share the same dreamsfi
