Conversations that Bridge the Divide
Civil discourse is engagement in conversation intended to enhance understanding.
This half-day, virtual, professional development seminar facilitated by Greg Abell, Founder & Principal of Sound Options Group, will give participants the skills and strategies for structuring conversations around polarizing issues in service of shared learning and deeper understanding. This is an essential capacity for leaders and communities.
In 1998, Deborah Tannen wrote, The Argument Culture: Moving from Debate to Dialogue. One reviewer, in describing the book wrote,
Our society has become overwhelmingly adversarial, with consequences not only in our ability to solve problems but also in our personal relationships. The war on drugs, the battle of the sexes, politicians' turf battleswar metaphors pervade our talk and shape our thinking, urging us to approach anything we need to accomplish as a fight between two opposing sides.
The challenge has become significantly greater in the ensuing 20 years.
