Monkey Makes Mischief in Heaven
The Monkey King delights in his new job in the Heavenly Peach Garden, snatching delicious, forbidden peaches and hoping to learn how the heavenly immortals live forever. But when he finds out that he's been left out of the Jade Emperors Peach Blossom Banquet, Monkey flies off to make mischief in the Heavens. Puppeteer Margaret Moody presents this lively episode of the Chinese epic Journey to the West with traditional Taiwanese hand puppets and choreography. Come for the show, stay to try out hand puppets! Best for people 5 and older, children should be accompanied by an adult.
Margaret Moody studied Bu Dai Xi (cloth bag theater) style puppetry with the I Wan Jan Traditional Hand Puppet Troupe in Taiwan in the 1980s. She loves the acrobatic flourishes of Bu Dai Xi as well as the subtle gestures that reveal a puppets personality. Her solo performances include elements of the Bu Dai Xi style, which is traditionally performed by 2 puppeteers who are accompanied by a drummer and several more instrumentalists. Margaret performs in schools, arts centers, libraries and private events in New England.
Monkey Makes Mischief in Heaven is the first performance in Februarys Puppet Pop-up at Artbeat in Arlington. Artbeat founder Jan Whitted welcomes Margaret Moody Puppets as the first pop-up artist in the creativity studio, which offers fun, accessible art experiences for people of all ages.
