IvyKids Writing Workshop: Writing Sports-Related Narrative Non-Fiction
Sports stories nearly always involve elements of struggle, doubt, determination, success, and overcoming challenges, says bestselling author Andrew Maraniss. Sports provide an accessible avenue to explore issues related to racial and gender equality, American and international politics, and so many other social forces. This workshop will explore techniques for using sports as the basis for narrative non-fiction.

Andrew Maraniss is a New York Times-bestselling author. His first book, Strong Inside, tells the story of Perry Wallace, the first African-American basketball player in the Southeast Conference. The Young Reader edition was named a Top 10 Biography and Top 10 Sports Book of 2017 by the American Library Association. His second book, Games of Deception, is the story of the first U.S. Olympic basketball team, which competed at the 1936 Summer Games in Nazi Germany.

Andrew is a visiting author at Vanderbilt University Athletics and a contributor to ESPNs TheUndefeated.com. The son of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author David Maraniss and trailblazing environmentalist Linda Maraniss, Andrew was born in Madison, WI, grew up in Washington, DC, and Austin, TX, and now lives in Brentwood, TN, with his wife Alison, and their two young children.

$25 fee includes a signed copy of Games of Deception and an Ivy Bookshop Journal. RSVP to 410-377-2966 or MarthaAtTheIvy@gmail.com by January 27th
