Josiah Johnson with Caitlin Jemma
Josiah Johnson
Although healing can be the hardest thing to do, Josiah Johnson has allowed his recovery from the darkness of addiction to fuel a bright new return to music. The former founding member of indie-folk band The Head and The Heart, Johnsons burgeoning solo career offers him the ability to dive into a restored self. His new musical catalog is flush with deep, soulful ballads that paint the imagination with the rich and emotional landscapes of love, loss and true transformation. Ive started writing some songs that are more healing, Johnson explained. Then, by singing them over and over again the self-fulfilling prophecy will be for wholeness. A lot of the songs I used to write were about the way things arent the way they used to be, theyre changing, I dont have what I wanted to have, which are all totally valid things to mourn. But when I lived in them for so long, I believed it was the story of my life. But the story of my life is that Im very privileged and I have tons of wonderful things. And so, Ive been trying to both acknowledge the things that are painful and also have songs that have the perspective of the wholeness." Caitlin Jemma
To experience a Caitlin Jemma performance is to witness an artist blossoming in real time. Her sound fills the room with an assertion that remains open to all that it encounters, and each song is a living, growing entity that reflects the melding of a myriad of influences. Her versatility emerges through an honest exploration of her art, and her identity remains steady as she traverses the musical spectrum of soul, country, and mystical folk. As an artist, she runs away from nothing: the wild stands alongside the polished, the intimate beside the far-reaching. At the heart of each song is a story: one we all live, relate to, celebrate and mourn stories told with transparency that ignites the imagination of the lands shes traveled and the people shes gathered as her own. Whether as a solo act or with her band, Jemma is constantly examining her work from every angle, while maintaining the raw emotion that provides the bedrock of both her songwriting and performance.
