Joyce Grant CD Release Event
Joyce Grant, a mezzo soprano with a voice like dark honey, has been singing jazz in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years at venues such as the Empire Plush Room and Donatello Hotel in San Francisco, the Empress Theater, Vallejo, and Woodminster Amphitheater, Oakland, to name but a few. For the past 10 years she has been the lead vocalist for City Swing, an 18-piece big band based out of San Francisco, and is a frequent participant in the West Coast Ragtime festival. Born in Texarkana, Arkansas, the town where Scott Joplin was raised, she is the great-great-niece of the famed ragtime composer. Grant moved to Oakland as a child where she started singing with the North Oakland Baptist Church Youth Choir and has never looked back. As a songwriter she has put lyrics to several of Scott Joplins pieces and released the CD In The Morning (co-produced with Doug McKeehan , 2010), a collectionof original songs ranging in style from jazz to blues to R&B. In her current release, Surrounded By Blue, she brings her sensitive and powerful vocal interpretations to a mix of standards and some originals by producer Doug McKeehan.
Joining Joyce for this CD release party at the Sound Room are music director/pianist Doug McKeehan, multi reeds instrumentalist Tony Malfatti, bassist Marc Levine, and drummer Curt Moore.
