Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train
Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train, by award-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, focuses on Angel Cruz (Rudy Cabrera), a Puerto Rican bike messenger from Harlem, who faces attempted murder charges for shooting a prominent cult leader in an attempt to rescue a childhood friend from the grips of the cult. In court, his defense will be mounted by Mary Jane Hanrahan (Kate Ambrosini), a seasoned and cynical public defender of Irish-Italian descent, born and raised in a working-class neighborhood of Sunnyside, Queens but educated among the elite of New York's Upper East Side.
While incarcerated, Angel is placed in protective custody and comes into contact with Lucius Jenkins (Edward V. Crews), a born-again Christian known as the 'Black Plague,' after being found guilty of eight murders. Jenkins is awaiting word on whether or not he will be extradited to Florida and placed on death row. Both men must endure the cruelty of their guard, Valdez (Jason Quinn), whose cruel treatment of inmates reflects his attitudes on right and wrong. These attitudes are a far cry from those of Charlie D'Amico (Rich Morra), a guard who'd become friendly with Jenkins before being relieved of his post.
Described by the New York Times as a "fire-breathing drama," Jesus Hopped The 'A' Train is a story about class, race, criminal justice and the moral responsibility each of us has for ourselves and to one another.
